Cersei Lannister

Cersei Lannister

In, Game of Thrones, Cersei, a woman of unmatched beauty, is the current Queen Regent of Westeros and the daughter of Tywin Lannister, the most powerful and ruthless man in the seven kingdoms.

In mythology, Circe, was a powerful enchantress who could and often did, turn human beings into animals. She is most famous for her encounter with Odysseus and his men where she turns his men into pigs.

Lets do a little compare, shall we?

IN MYTHOLOGY:

Emboldened quotes adapted taken from page 109- 110 of The Dictionary of Classical Mythology by Jenny March and in order they appear in the book.

'They come to Circe's gleaming home, around which prowl huge lions and wolves, fearsome beasts...'
Cersei is a Lannister. The Lannisters are currently the most powerful family in Westeros.
Casterly Rock, their ancestral home, is a fortress carved out of a great stone hill that has never fallen.
Their house symbol is a lion which traditionally symbolizes bravery, valour, strength, and royalty. and their house words are: Hear Me Roar.

'She gives them wine to drink, flavoured with barley and cheese and honey but mixed with a magical drug.'
In the myth this is what turns Odyseus's men into pigs. In the book/show Cersei made sure that her husband Robert had plenty of extremely strong wine served to him while hunting via her cousin Lancel to make him drunker then he had ever been before. When his hunting party finally tracked down a boar an extremely drunk Robert missed his mark and got mortally gored.

The defeated goddess suggests that they retire to bed and the pleasures of love...
Cersei makes an offer of 'friendship' to Ned Stark after he finds out about her long time love affair with her twin brother Jaime in exchange for him not saying anything to anyone. But as you know,. Ned turns her down and well... That doesn't end well.

Has given him valuable advice about the dangers of his journey home.
Cersei gives Ned Stark the one valuable peace of advice that he should have listened to.
'When you play the game of thrones you win or you die. There is no middle ground.' This tells him that she is willing to risk everyone and everything in order to hold onto power. That no one will ever be safe.

Do you agree? Or do you know of another mythological character I can put forward? Please let me know what you think via Twitter or underneath if you prefer.
